EIT Food and DevelopMinded launch new carbon accounting report for businesses
New report offers impartial advice on choosing the right carbon accounting solution for companies of all sizes
EIT Food, the world’s largest food innovation community, and DevelopMinded, a strategic advisory firm focused on accelerating the sustainability transformation, have today launched a new report to support companies with carbon accounting. EIT Food is supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union.
As the United Nations warns that the international community is falling far short of the Paris goals, with no credible pathway to 1.5°C in place, the Making Sense of Carbon Accounting report offers insights and guidance into getting started with carbon accounting, providing the tools and knowledge for companies of all sizes to begin measuring and reducing their carbon footprint.
Carbon accounting, the process by which organisations can assess their greenhouse gas emissions and therefore understand their climate impact, is the essential first step for businesses to adopt the system-wide transformation needed to avoid climate disaster. On 11th November, global attention will be focussed on the policies and actions needed to reduced carbon footprints on Decarbonization Day at COP27 in Egypt.
The Making Sense of Carbon Accounting report offers a complete overview of carbon accounting solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of businesses, and compares 17 providers including Greenly, PlanA, FigBytes and Emitwise. The report summarises the most important features of each solution, how the tool works and for which type of company it is suitable – helping companies to save time and money by choosing the right solution for their specific needs.
In a rapidly developing and changing sector, where regulation, reporting frameworks and solutions are expected to change drastically in years to come, DevelopMinded plans to publish a yearly updated report.

“The latest warnings from the United Nations paint a stark picture of just how much we need to transform the way we do business to avoid climate disaster. In the agrifood sector, this is no different, which is why we all need to work towards a just transition to a net-zero food sector. The more we can do to make small changes at a business level, the more we can help bring about sweeping change throughout the food system.”
“Companies need to start focusing on ensuring long-term business viability. They will need to transform business practices to operate within the planetary boundaries and carbon accounting is an integral part of sustainability transformation efforts. This report will provide ways to get started on or improve your organisation’s carbon accounting approach today.”
“As COP27 kicks off, the world is acutely aware of the need for action and implementation, and not for more rhetoric. Our actions are only as good as our people and our tools. We know that we have good people, but it's crucial that we also have the tools to help us measure and implement continuous improvement strategies and plans. This report enables business leaders to choose the right carbon accounting tool to equip their teams with what they need to lead on making a real impact on lowering their emissions.”
