Mainor School of Economics (Pepleri 6, 51003 Tartu, Estonia)

Join the seminar and the round table discussion on the use of local and organic food in public education!

The Association of the Municipalities of Tartu County in cooperation with Tartu Biotechnology Park has started developing a Goodwill Agreement for using local and organic food in public educational institutions in Tartu County. The aim is to ensure the unified development of catering arrangements in educational institutions and significantly increase the proportion of local and organic food on the menus.

During the seminar to be followed by a round table discussion, the results of the first part of the study "Mapping the catering arrangements and volumes of raw materials of educational institutions in Tartu County and the availability of local raw materials” will be introduced.

The aim of this event is to enhance cooperation between public sector (educational institutions) and local food producers and through this, empower local small-scale producers, shorten food supply chains and secure food security in the Tartu region.

Elen Peetsmann, director of the Organic Centre of the Estonian Academy of Life Sciences, will present an overview of the catering arrangements and raw material volumes of educational institutions in Tartu County.

The round table discussion seeks solutions to the following questions:

  • How to increase the supply of local and organic raw materials in educational institutions?

  • How to raise awareness of healthy, nourishing food and the quality of food education in kindergartens and schools (involving students, teachers, and parents)?

  • How to support the professional development of school chefs and ensure a new generation of chefs?

Maris Väli-Täht and Keiu Käära from EIT Food Estonia Hub are going to participate in the seminar and round table discussion.
