The Future of Plant-Based “TU-NAH”

Meet BettaF!sh, an EIT Food startup based in Germany that creates plant-based “TU-NAH” from seaweed and fava beans. Their “TU-NAH” tastes just like tuna, looks just like tuna, is 100% plant-based, high in protein and contains no soy or wheat. The company turn regeneratively cultivated seaweed into fish alternatives to restore marine eco-systems, they say that “TU-NAH” stands for healthier oceans and a mouth-watering, plant-based future.

1) What is your idea?

"BettaF!sh is making seaweed the new mainstream food by developing the most authentic and delicious plant-based tuna alternative TU-NAH out of European seaweed. By that, we’re not only regenerating our oceans, but also ensure an alternative, sustainable income source for fishing communities with seaweed farming".

2) Where can we find your products?

"You can find our delicious TU-NAH all over Europe: Our biggest markets are Germany (Müller, REWE Online, ROSSMANN Online), Austria (BILLA) and Switzerland (Coop) but we’re also super active in food service and the B2B industry. For example, you can find TU-NAH on the menu at L’Osteria, Pizza Hut, Deutsche Bahn and several independent restaurants across Germany".

3) How has EIT Food helped you on your journey?

"The EIT Food network has been really helpful, especially the EIT Food HIVE platform but also their online sessions which always gave us insightful information on impact measurement. Within just a few months, we were matched with a corporate food service partner who is looking to boost their sustainability credentials. We also got better connected on the product development side thanks to introductions to EIT Food’s academic and research partners such as Fraunhofer Institute. The financial assistance offered by EIT Food has also been invaluable and allowed us to attend some incredible networking, market discovery and trade events over the last year".
